com·mu·ni·ca·tion . noun . /kəˌmyo͞onəˈkāSHən/ : the act or process of using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors to express or exchange information or to express your ideas, thoughts, feeling, etc., to someone else (merriam-webster dictionary)

I will be the first to admit that I am one who struggles a little with this topic. In situations that require a fight or flight response, especially in a moment of being vulnerable and hurt….I definitely choose flight. Immature? Yes, definitely and something that I need to work on e-v-e-r-y-d-a-y, especially in my marriage.

You’re probably wondering, what’s my point in all this serious talk? It’s Wedding Wednesday and we’re supposed to talk about flowers, and dresses, and table settings….hair and make up….all things fabulous and magical. Right? Well yes, technically we should but  today I’m not. Today I’m ditching the sparkling white dresses & spring flower bouquets to talk about a very REAL LIFE topic when it comes marriage.

I’ll be completely honest with you. I had a crappy night last night due to my lack of communication skills. My husband and I made a decision on a subject, only to later realize that only one of us agreed with the actual decision. It sucked, there were tears, hurtful things were said, and it was all due to fact that I can’t communicate with “grown up” words…..yes I still may be a little bitter. But regardless, it was a whole situation that could have been completely avoided, had we communicated!!

So now let me show where you fall into this scenario….You found your Perfect Guy, you guys dated, your first kiss was the kiss of all kisses, you fell in love (maybe at first sight….because I believe it 😉 ), he proposed, and now you’re eagerly planning for your wedding! I am more than excited for you….seriously! These are some on the best times of your life and ones that you will never forget.

As this whole process begins, there comes somewhat of a blissful viel that falls over the bride’s and groom’s eyes. Yes you may enoucter some tiffs regarding the guest list, seating arrangements, and then the last minutes stress jitters….but for the most part it’s a blissful ride down to the altar. I mean COME ON…you’re marrying the man of your dreams and living your version of “Happily Ever After”!!!

But have you guys really had to communicate? Yes you guys have worked through your possible disputes of where to live, breaking old selfish habits (like staying up late reading a book and then going to bed early the next night leaving no room for quality time), deciding whether or not you’ll have a dog…etc. But have you guys talked about when you really want to have kids? Did just breeze on the subject and decided to figure it out when the time came? How many kids do you want to have? How will you raise your kids? Have you communicated on how involved you want your relatives to be in your kid’s lives? How much time is appropriate to spend with family? How are you going to separate time evenly spent with both sides of the family? How much time is too much? Not enough? What roles will the wife play in the house? What roles will the husband play? Who will take out the trash? Who will do the dishes?

Have you thought about any of these things? It may just be me and my lack of life lived, but I never did. As little and simplistic as some of these things seem, it can turn into a monumental obstacle in your marriage. Everyone has their own opinion and just because you two are soul mates, doesn’t mean you may agree on every single thing. Are you able to communicate to each other and work to a solution?

Communication. Ladies, we’ve got to learn to COMMUNICATE. Guys can’t read our emotions like we read each others….they are sometimes (I say this lovingly) utterly clueless and need to be told. And if you are feeling something deep down inside, JUST SPEAK IT! Learn to find you voice and speak your opinion because running the opposite directions just pauses problem momentarily. It’s time to learn how to use your “grown up” words 😉

In light of sharing from my personal life and struggles I want to set the record straight. I love my husband more than anything in the entire universe and marrying him was the BEST decision I ever made. The day that we got married was the day I felt like I was finally living my life. I wouldn’t trade a single day with him, for all of the riches in the world because he is my everything.

Cheers to using “grown up” words and many martinis in the process 😉

“Ring by Spring”

In small private colleges, or any college for that matter, there is a popular saying that many young ladies OBSESS over, during their first semester of school. It describes young ladies that attend colleges to get their “MRS” degree…….What? We can’t help it..some of us women were just made to get married. It’s what our “dream” is……it fulfills us. Plus, who says you can’t go to school and be married…it’s a free country right? (PLUS colleges are prone to giving more financial aide to young married couples, just an FYI 😉 )

After attending a year at BIOLA, a small and private college, the saying “Ring by Spring” was one that I became all too familiar with. Given, I was not dating anyone at the time, therefore making the concept foreign, but I understood the gist of it. Girl goes to college, meets the guy she has been waiting her entire life for, girl and guy date, fall in Love, & come spring time (or preferably before) guy proposes to girl.

For some it’s a concept they don’t want to think about until after graduating. For others it’s a dream come true. Being that I am quite the Romantic type, I believe in the later… fact I encourage it! Many of my own friends were the true definition of the “Ring by Spring” theory and they have never been happier in their life.

Here as the G&S Family we love, LOVE! Especially, Young Love! We could be partial because one of us married younger in life but Love is Love and it’s what we believe in!

So with this belief we want to introduce our “Ring by Spring” Campaign! We know that getting engaged and married young comes with a lot of big responsibilities and many MANY new & big finances (yes we are saying this from experience). With this being said we want to give away one Mini Engagement shoot & styling to a young and deserving couple! For the rest of you “Young Love Birds” out there, we will be having promotional pricing for mini engagement shoots, as well.

Now I know you’re probably asking yourself, “What do I have to do?” First, log on to your instagram and follow us @withgraceandstyle. Second, repost our “Ring by Spring” post and tag us, as well of any of your friends who you think would be interested! Lastly, leave us a comment here on how you and your Soul Mate met and why guys need this Engagement session giveaway.

We are so excited to hear all of your love stories and look forward to working with one very special couple! Happy Wedding Wednesday!

Monday Inspiration…

Dior, Prada, Valentino, Gucci, Armani…these are the names that RULED the Red Carpet last night at the 2014 Academy Awards. GLAMOROUS is the only word that I think of. I may not ever get a chance to wear any of these couture gown (because it cost more then a years worth of my rent) I can still gawk and drool over them…and keep praying that I one day will 😉

With all of the show stopping looks, I (and I really mean us at the With Grace & Style office) couldn’t help but think of our brides. The dresses, the shoes, the makeup, the hair….we were inspired and wanted to share some of our favorite Red Carpet looks that are totally Bridal Worthy!

So lets start with the ladies!

Olivia, Olivia, Olivia. I don’t  know if it’s the fact that she is preggers that makes her GLOW but Olivia Wilde simply is a vision. Her cat-eye and romantic up-do are a Romatic bride’s dream.

We love Amy Adam’s sleek and elegant up do for our Classical Bride. Her natural lip and eye makeup fit the look just perfectly.

If there’s anyone that can make a “grungy” bed head, chic…it’s Miss Watson. We love this du for our Untraditional and Rocking Bride. Did we mention those fab Red lips of hers?

Kate Hudson & Versace….need I say more? For our Brides who are sexy and know it! Get it girl!

A fresh face on the Red Carpet wearing Prada, Lupita Nyong’o was a goddess! She looked absolutely stunning pairing that plunging neckline with a full bodied skirt that l-i-t-e-r-a-l-l-y flowed. For any of our Brides that want to feel like a grecian goddess!

We obviously had to have Jennifer Lawrence in the mix! She’s the girl everyone wants to be best friends with and she’s never looked more stunning in a red gown then now! She knows she loves Dior and Dior loves her… matter how many times she may fall 😉 We love you Jennifer!!! For our Modern Bride!

And now the men….because they have to look good too!

Bradley…..oh how you make us swoon!! Facial hair never looked so sexy paired with a coat and bow tie. For any of our Formal Grooms, who want to rock the facial hair 🙂

White seemed to be the hot color for men this year. Throw out your vision of a waiter and think of Ryan Seacrest & Jared Leto looking f-i-n-e! We love this idea for any groom who wants to stand out with his bride. (I also may have to figure out what kind of conditioner Jared uses)

And what better way to end then with Leo? Classic, timeless….he’s a dream. For the Classical and Formal Groom.

Happy Monday & Happy Wedding Planning to all of you brides out there!

San Francisco & Juicing

Thursdays mean recipes on the blog. So it’s Thursday…..and here’s a quick recipe:

I’ve been obsessed with this Green Vegetable blend for the last week! I haven’t even had to have coffee! It’s so full of vitamins and nutrients that  give you energy and make your skin glow!

Breakfast Juice: Adapted from The First Mess

  • 1 cup of chopped Kale
  • 1/2 cup of chopped Cucumber
  • Juice from 1 Lime (I used a hand juicer)
  • 1 chopped Apple (I used the little apples that you can buy in a bag from Trader’s)
  • Handful of a mixture fresh Parsley & Mint (buy from Trader’s and just pull off the stems…I use more Mint then Parsley because it’s good for your tummy)
  • 1 1/2 cup of filtered Water
  • 1/2 cup of frozen Peaches (try to get Organic)
  • 1/2 cup of frozen Mango (You can get organic from Trader’s)

Add all of the ingredients into a blender and blend for about a minute or two! Enjoy!

Now as we enjoy our Breakfast Juices, I wanted to share on my Trip to San Francisco from two weekends ago! It was by far one of the most AMAZING trips! The City is so beautiful, busy and diverse! It seemed as though no matter who you were, you were accepted. I loved it. And to make the whole trip/experience even more fun, we drove  the 8 hours to San Francisco! (no this is not sarcastic…I genuinely love Road Trips!)

Driving through what can be considered as the “country” or “prairie” part of California makes me happy! When I was younger my family would take a 12 hour drive up the I-5 to go camping every summer. Driving through it that weekend, brought back so many childhood memories. Those times will remain as some of the best. 🙂

It was a beautiful drive though, full of rolling landscapes, cattle (I want a cow for a pet now), one bag of the ultimate road trip snack CheckMix, two naps, and two pit stops.

Oh Hey!

Love this guy!

Love how the fog sets on the mountains early in the morning 🙂

After the scenic 8 hour drive through the ‘Country Side” we were in The City!

So, the whole idea about going to San Francisco was for Valentine’s Day. Not only were we there for V Day but also the weekend of the Chinese New Year! It was insanely crowded everywhere we went and excitement filled the air. It was so inspiring to see so many people celebrate and take pride in a tradition that has lasted centuries….it was the honoring of a legacy.

The whole experience was inspiring! Walking through all of the shops in China Town was amazing! No wonder the culture is considered to be the healthiest…..they use pure herbs and actual REAL natural ingredients (if a bag of cookies says it has natural ingredients, it’s not real) like roots and seeds to cure headaches, stomach aches, toe fungus…pretty much everything. You better believe that if there was a little shop like that around my house, I would never buy a bottle of ibuprofen again (this is the hippy). 😉

Golden Gate off in the distance!

How beautiful is this City!!?? One of my FAVORITE things about it was the architecture….

Unfortunately, we decided to skip on the Golden Gate Bridge this trip, but are planning on it for the next 🙂

Here are some pics of the Grace Catholic Cathedral we visited. It was so beautiful and glorious!

Down yonder is the beautiful Fisherman’s Wharf 🙂

We LOVED the Cable Cars! It’s so awesome to see one of the World’s last manually operated cable car systems, still in motion today!

The Architecture!!!

Love, love, LOVE!

I’m not sure what the Residence Club is, but I know that I want to be apart of it! 😉

Josh and I visited China Town, Union Square, and Fisherman’s Wharf. Our favorite was Fisherman’s Wharf being that we both love being anywhere by the sea. We shopped, had drinks, ate a lot of sweets, walked about 23.5 miles (which obviously canceled out the sweets 😉 ), rode the cable car, and visited the beautiful Grace Catholic Cathedral. The whole trip was a dream and will be going down in my book for the Best Valentine’s Day Weekend Ever!

Thanks for the amazing Surprise Josh!

Monday Inspiration..

Happy Monday Beaus!

Even though I dislike Monday, just as much as the average American, I decided to use this angst that I have towards this Day and turn it into a positive thing. I am channeling my negativity into positivity……PLUS it’s “Monday Inspiration” and we’re talking a little about homes!

This weekend Josh and I looked at houses! We are a long while away from actually buying a house, but it’s always fun to look. Buying a house is the next goal that Josh and I have as a couple but it takes a lot of time, money, insurance, more money, and then even a little bit more money……we have time right? 😉

Looking at houses was a great for Josh and I because we both got to point out the types of styles we liked and didn’t like. I think this is a great activity for any couple to do. It may be that you and your significant other have very different tastes and ideas when it comes to creating a home together. Decorating (depending on the man) can turn into a bigger battle then you would ever expect. I would explore the idea now to see what you are in for……at the end of the day though, hopefully he will understand that “women know best” when it comes to making your house a home. 😉

It turns out that both Josh and I imagine ourselves in the same home. You could pretty much sum it up as: Country Living! Yeeeehaaww!

Here are some pics that have me drooling and itching to get into a home ASAP!

Screen shot 2012-10-15 at 1.28.38 PM

Both Josh and I agree that a front porch is A MUST for us 🙂 Nothing like sipping lemonade on a porch swing..

Desigrans Collection Rustic style DP_Darnell-White-Cottage-Kitchen_s3x4_lg

Both of these kitchens are really a dream! The lighting….to die for!!

The idea of a door going from the kitchen to our garden (because we will have a garden) makes me so happy!

AHHH……I just want to take a bath in both of these tubs!! Don’t you?

So these are ideas of what my dream home would be like! As you can tell I am a bit obsessed with white, natural lighting, and wood….country all in itself!

Now that you know what we love as a couple, let us know what your dream home would be!! Happy Monday!

Baby Fever..

So the saying goes: “First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby in the baby carriage.”

As juvenile as this singalong rhyme sounds, it is that gateway to women and the way that they think. It becomes apart of “The List”. This list goes along the lines of: go to school, find a guy, fall in love, get married, have a baby, find a career that allows for both work and raising a family. But this isn’t about finding the right career, today is about babies.

So let’s talk babies…..they’re cute, cuddly, cry a lot, poop a lot, eat a lot, wear out your titties, tear up your lady parts, and are life’s GREATEST pride and joy. So when can I have one? I want to experience nature’s greatest gift and the “labor of love”! When will my time come to have babies? Is there ever a right time to have a baby? Are you ever ready to have a baby?

These are all questions that have been running through my mind lately. Getting married as young as Josh and I did, people suspected that we were pregnant. Even till this day, every time that I head to the doctor, people get this weird smile on their face that says, “You’re pregnant aren’t you?”, all I want to do is yell back to them “PEOPLE!! It’s been six months, I am pretty sure I would have been showing!!” Then they realize I’m not pregnant, say that it’s good and to wait, and then a month later start asking “When are you guys going to have kids?”  It’s a cycle that has left me asking myself….when do I want to have a baby?

After being married for the first few months, I was told over and OVER again to wait. My parents told me to enjoy myself, have fun, and get to know Josh because once a baby comes into the pic your whole life revolves around that baby. This all being said I decided to make a list:

The “Before Baby” List:

  • Travel to your Europe (for like a month, backpack style) and see EVERYTHING
  • See Coldplay in concert (btw they have a new album out in April…SO EXCITED!!)
  • Walk the Great Wall of China
  • Go to school and finish your AA
  • Figure out what you want to do with your life
  • Get a puppy/train puppy
  • Move into a bigger apartment/condo
  • Loose a few lbs.
  • Adopt an all organic food diet
  • Run a marathon
  • Run a thousand miles
  • Get a Marc Jacobs purse (I have an obsession but am too cheap to spend the money)
  • Design a wedding gown
  • Make a batch of my grandma’s Chilean Empanadas
  • Become fluent in spanish
  • Get over my awkward fear of elevators
  • Learn to not eat so much chocolate on my period

When I first made this list I was so determined to complete ALL of these goals. NOTHING would get in my way….you couldn’t offer me a million dollars to have a baby (Yes I can be stubborn) I was proud of my list and was going to follow through. So, I told my friend and family about “The List”….mistake. Soon, people were jokingly telling me that they would help fund my European excursion and my get me a puppy. I was SO FRUSTRATED! I felt like I was for ONCE in my life, I was listening to people around me and taking their advice….just to be asked a few months later “So when you popping one out?” With all of these comments….I became baby crazy. I looked up baby pictures, strolled through the baby clothes at target, stalked the nursery at church… was (mildly still is) a bad case of Baby Fever. I felt like every where I looked there were babies and I was the only one without a baby.

After a few weeks of this, I decided to look online “when is the best time to have a baby”. Google did it’s job well in giving me quizzes, forums, blogs….it gave me EVERYTHING. I read, read, and read. I read that after two years of being married was the perfect time, I read that conceiving on the wedding night was the best thing that could happen to a couple, one year after being married, a year an a half….so many opinions. Then there were the “is your body in the right condition to have a baby” forums and all the precautions you need to take and all the vitamins….blah, blah, BLAH! All of the information hurt my head.

What I decided from all this craziness is that (and this is my personal opinion) no one is ever ready to have a baby. Having a baby is like getting a tattoo on your forehead (people who get it usually aren’t cognitively aware that it happened……until the next morning) it is PERMANENT. At the end of the day though, they become life’s greatest gift.

So what does this mean for me? Am I going to have a baby anytime soon? No, probably not. I know that I would love to spend as much time with Josh and travel. Traveling to Europe may have to wait until later though……you never know what a bottle of wine can do on any given night 😉

Cheers to our future babies,
