“It’s Friday, Friday, Friday...Gotta get down on Friday”

As much as we hate to admit it, Rebecca Black knew what she was talking about. Everybody loves to get down on Fridays…..especially us here at the G&S Office. 😉

Needless to say, we are ready for the OSCARS weekend! Does anyone have any fabulous plans? Our fingers are crossed that the rain will stay, giving us the excuse to drink hot cocoa and run marathons of classics, prepping for the Oscars! We can’t wait!

Today’s marking the first of our “Friday Favorites” Series where we will talk about a few things that we’ve been obsessing over for the week. So here we go!

San Francisco & Juicing

Thursdays mean recipes on the blog. So it’s Thursday…..and here’s a quick recipe:

I’ve been obsessed with this Green Vegetable blend for the last week! I haven’t even had to have coffee! It’s so full of vitamins and nutrients that  give you energy and make your skin glow!

Breakfast Juice: Adapted from The First Mess

  • 1 cup of chopped Kale
  • 1/2 cup of chopped Cucumber
  • Juice from 1 Lime (I used a hand juicer)
  • 1 chopped Apple (I used the little apples that you can buy in a bag from Trader’s)
  • Handful of a mixture fresh Parsley & Mint (buy from Trader’s and just pull off the stems…I use more Mint then Parsley because it’s good for your tummy)
  • 1 1/2 cup of filtered Water
  • 1/2 cup of frozen Peaches (try to get Organic)
  • 1/2 cup of frozen Mango (You can get organic from Trader’s)

Add all of the ingredients into a blender and blend for about a minute or two! Enjoy!

Now as we enjoy our Breakfast Juices, I wanted to share on my Trip to San Francisco from two weekends ago! It was by far one of the most AMAZING trips! The City is so beautiful, busy and diverse! It seemed as though no matter who you were, you were accepted. I loved it. And to make the whole trip/experience even more fun, we drove  the 8 hours to San Francisco! (no this is not sarcastic…I genuinely love Road Trips!)

Driving through what can be considered as the “country” or “prairie” part of California makes me happy! When I was younger my family would take a 12 hour drive up the I-5 to go camping every summer. Driving through it that weekend, brought back so many childhood memories. Those times will remain as some of the best. 🙂

It was a beautiful drive though, full of rolling landscapes, cattle (I want a cow for a pet now), one bag of the ultimate road trip snack CheckMix, two naps, and two pit stops.

Oh Hey!

Love this guy!

Love how the fog sets on the mountains early in the morning 🙂

After the scenic 8 hour drive through the ‘Country Side” we were in The City!

So, the whole idea about going to San Francisco was for Valentine’s Day. Not only were we there for V Day but also the weekend of the Chinese New Year! It was insanely crowded everywhere we went and excitement filled the air. It was so inspiring to see so many people celebrate and take pride in a tradition that has lasted centuries….it was the honoring of a legacy.

The whole experience was inspiring! Walking through all of the shops in China Town was amazing! No wonder the culture is considered to be the healthiest…..they use pure herbs and actual REAL natural ingredients (if a bag of cookies says it has natural ingredients, it’s not real) like roots and seeds to cure headaches, stomach aches, toe fungus…pretty much everything. You better believe that if there was a little shop like that around my house, I would never buy a bottle of ibuprofen again (this is the hippy). 😉

Golden Gate off in the distance!

How beautiful is this City!!?? One of my FAVORITE things about it was the architecture….

Unfortunately, we decided to skip on the Golden Gate Bridge this trip, but are planning on it for the next 🙂

Here are some pics of the Grace Catholic Cathedral we visited. It was so beautiful and glorious!

Down yonder is the beautiful Fisherman’s Wharf 🙂

We LOVED the Cable Cars! It’s so awesome to see one of the World’s last manually operated cable car systems, still in motion today!

The Architecture!!!

Love, love, LOVE!

I’m not sure what the Residence Club is, but I know that I want to be apart of it! 😉

Josh and I visited China Town, Union Square, and Fisherman’s Wharf. Our favorite was Fisherman’s Wharf being that we both love being anywhere by the sea. We shopped, had drinks, ate a lot of sweets, walked about 23.5 miles (which obviously canceled out the sweets 😉 ), rode the cable car, and visited the beautiful Grace Catholic Cathedral. The whole trip was a dream and will be going down in my book for the Best Valentine’s Day Weekend Ever!

Thanks for the amazing Surprise Josh!

WEDDING WEDNESDAY: Choosing Your Bridesmaids….

You got engaged. The Wedding Planning has begun. You’ve started looking at dresses, ceremony and reception locations, you’re doing research online…. and then it comes. That moment to choose your Bridal Party. Decisions, decisions!

For the Groom it always seems to be as easy as choosing a cereal in the morning. The asking part is even quicker….. “Hey, so, want to be in my Wedding? Yeah? Sweet.” and that’s that. Your future husband has his Groomsmen lined up and is on to more important things, like deciding what to have for dinner.

Choosing your Bridesmaids is a whole other story! It’s a calculated decision that’s close to heart…. and with all important decisions seems to come frustration, anxiety and panic (you know, like that feeling you get while at the MAC cosmetics store looking through the eyeshadows. Which of the 30,000 will you buy?! Important decisions like that!) So take a breath because here are a few personal tips to remember while choosing the best of the best to be by your side on that special day:

Your Wedding Means Just As Much To Her As It Does To You

The old rule of thumb was to ask your relatives (and Groom’s relatives) to be part of the Bridal Party, but times have changed. Weddings have stepped away from the “Traditional” route and have embraced the “Personal” approach of each couple.  Your Bridesmaids will be with you not only on your actual Wedding Day but during the bridal events that come before….. their attitude makes a difference. Choose the girls that you know in your heart will be happy to be there, will look past any Bridezillaness (which of course you’ll do your best to prevent, obvs!) and aren’t likely to bring the day/mood down. They may not be genetically related, but you’d never know it from their joy for you!

She Wants To Participate In Your Bridal Events

There’s a big difference between wanting to be somewhere than feeling obligated to be somewhere. Don’t get me wrong…. but Bridesmaid dress shopping and fittings aren’t everyones cup of tea. I’m not saying that they should be ecstatic to be there, but there should be some sort of desire at heart to be happy to be there for you. So be honest with yourself and keep your friends personal feelings in mind as well. If there is someone who you know would rather be cheering for you on the day of, with the rest of your guests (and probably get the best guest award) then be understanding of that and don’t pressure them to be a Bridesmaid or be offended if they choose to pass….. this title is simply not for everyone. So let the ones who truly want it enjoy it 🙂

You Personally Tell Her About Your Life

Through the lovely world of social media, we have the ability to share our lives with such detail that our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram friends feel like they see us everyday. Still, there are those women that you personally reach out to and spill all the details with. They’re there for Girls Night Out, they knew you got engaged because you told them rather then just seeing a photo posted online, they celebrate your work promotions with you, your family knows them, they’ve seen you laugh and cry…. possibly at the same time 😉 Your Wedding Day is a momentous and personal time that should be shared by the ladies that are present in your life at that moment. Perhaps you haven’t seen each other in a while due to distance, but the relationship remains just as strong. And remember…. bathroom trips in Wedding dresses can be tricky! You’ll only trust your closest girls for help 😉

Most importantly…. have fun and enjoy the moment! There are lots of ideas out there on how to ask your Bridesmaids to be a part of your Wedding Party so go all out with the invites 🙂 It will be an eventful journey ahead so be sure to document every step of the way by creating your own hashtag! That right there can be your first official Bridesmaid assignment…. have your girls make sure everyone is hashtagging! You’re welcome 😉

Why Not… Choose A Signature Scent

Screen Shot 2014-02-25 at 3.22.13 PM

I recently came across an article online titled Things To Do Before Turning 30 and by “came across” I really mean “intentionally Googled” and by “recently” I mean “every day since I turned 25. And now I’m 25…. and 26 months” but nonetheless, I read the article. Thankfully, I found that I had already checked off most of the items on this proverbial 20-Somethings To Do Life List: Take a road trip with friends (there should be fine print on this one warning you about car sickness and stopping for random Mexican food) Bake a cake from scratch just because (Yeah, that would be every Valentine’s Day spent sans date. Obviously) Take a random class (Real Estate school counts, right?) Buy a timeless coat (I’ll thank my brother’s department store employee discount for that one) and so on.

One of the items on the list suggested that we find our favorite perfume and this one I actually really liked. Growing up, wearing perfume seemed like one of the many privileges of adulthood  and becoming a woman…. so sophisticated and refined. There’s something about spraying on a wonderful fragrance that is instantly sexy. Yes, I said it- Sexy! Our teen years were for being cute and exploring the wonderful & fruity world of Bath & Body Works or Victoria’s Secret body sprays but as we travel beyond those years it’s more than okay to embrace the sexy 😉

So….. why not find your signature sent? Choosing a fragrance can be  baffling because it is such a subjective taste, so here are a few favorites to start with:

1. Mademoiselle by COCO Chanel

This fragrance is the definition of the Chanel style…. Chic and Elegant. The fresh scent is appropriate for both day and evening use.

2. Bright Crystal by Versace

Are you a floral lover? This fragrance is perfectly filled with a warmer peony and amber scent. The lightness of it is great for everyday wear.

3. Rose The One by Dolce & Gabbana

One of my personal favorites! Dolce & Gabbana really tapped into timeless, polished style with this one. Think Victoria Beckham sophisticate, definitely more of an evening wear.

4. Rosabotanica by BALENCIAGA

Not so much a rose scent fan? This fragrance can be your BFF…. although it really is a hit or miss. Filled with green, earthy notes you’ll either love or hate the stronger and straight to the point botanical scent.

5. Brit Eau de Parfum by Burberry

Another non-floral fragrance. Burberry combined their simple yet refined style to develop this lime, pear and sugared-almond scent. Perfect for day or evening use.

There are tons of amazing fragrances out there to cater to every style and preference. Take a trip to your local Sephora or department store this weekend and gather samples….. and as usual, we’d love to hear any of your favorites!

So cheers to embracing the inner sexy in all of us….. Holla!

Monday Inspiration..

Happy Monday Beaus!

Even though I dislike Monday, just as much as the average American, I decided to use this angst that I have towards this Day and turn it into a positive thing. I am channeling my negativity into positivity……PLUS it’s “Monday Inspiration” and we’re talking a little about homes!

This weekend Josh and I looked at houses! We are a long while away from actually buying a house, but it’s always fun to look. Buying a house is the next goal that Josh and I have as a couple but it takes a lot of time, money, insurance, more money, and then even a little bit more money……we have time right? 😉

Looking at houses was a great for Josh and I because we both got to point out the types of styles we liked and didn’t like. I think this is a great activity for any couple to do. It may be that you and your significant other have very different tastes and ideas when it comes to creating a home together. Decorating (depending on the man) can turn into a bigger battle then you would ever expect. I would explore the idea now to see what you are in for……at the end of the day though, hopefully he will understand that “women know best” when it comes to making your house a home. 😉

It turns out that both Josh and I imagine ourselves in the same home. You could pretty much sum it up as: Country Living! Yeeeehaaww!

Here are some pics that have me drooling and itching to get into a home ASAP!

Screen shot 2012-10-15 at 1.28.38 PM

Both Josh and I agree that a front porch is A MUST for us 🙂 Nothing like sipping lemonade on a porch swing..

Desigrans Collection Rustic style DP_Darnell-White-Cottage-Kitchen_s3x4_lg

Both of these kitchens are really a dream! The lighting….to die for!!

The idea of a door going from the kitchen to our garden (because we will have a garden) makes me so happy!

AHHH……I just want to take a bath in both of these tubs!! Don’t you?

So these are ideas of what my dream home would be like! As you can tell I am a bit obsessed with white, natural lighting, and wood….country all in itself!

Now that you know what we love as a couple, let us know what your dream home would be!! Happy Monday!

Baby Fever..

So the saying goes: “First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby in the baby carriage.”

As juvenile as this singalong rhyme sounds, it is that gateway to women and the way that they think. It becomes apart of “The List”. This list goes along the lines of: go to school, find a guy, fall in love, get married, have a baby, find a career that allows for both work and raising a family. But this isn’t about finding the right career, today is about babies.

So let’s talk babies…..they’re cute, cuddly, cry a lot, poop a lot, eat a lot, wear out your titties, tear up your lady parts, and are life’s GREATEST pride and joy. So when can I have one? I want to experience nature’s greatest gift and the “labor of love”! When will my time come to have babies? Is there ever a right time to have a baby? Are you ever ready to have a baby?

These are all questions that have been running through my mind lately. Getting married as young as Josh and I did, people suspected that we were pregnant. Even till this day, every time that I head to the doctor, people get this weird smile on their face that says, “You’re pregnant aren’t you?”, all I want to do is yell back to them “PEOPLE!! It’s been six months, I am pretty sure I would have been showing!!” Then they realize I’m not pregnant, say that it’s good and to wait, and then a month later start asking “When are you guys going to have kids?”  It’s a cycle that has left me asking myself….when do I want to have a baby?

After being married for the first few months, I was told over and OVER again to wait. My parents told me to enjoy myself, have fun, and get to know Josh because once a baby comes into the pic your whole life revolves around that baby. This all being said I decided to make a list:

The “Before Baby” List:

  • Travel to your Europe (for like a month, backpack style) and see EVERYTHING
  • See Coldplay in concert (btw they have a new album out in April…SO EXCITED!!)
  • Walk the Great Wall of China
  • Go to school and finish your AA
  • Figure out what you want to do with your life
  • Get a puppy/train puppy
  • Move into a bigger apartment/condo
  • Loose a few lbs.
  • Adopt an all organic food diet
  • Run a marathon
  • Run a thousand miles
  • Get a Marc Jacobs purse (I have an obsession but am too cheap to spend the money)
  • Design a wedding gown
  • Make a batch of my grandma’s Chilean Empanadas
  • Become fluent in spanish
  • Get over my awkward fear of elevators
  • Learn to not eat so much chocolate on my period

When I first made this list I was so determined to complete ALL of these goals. NOTHING would get in my way….you couldn’t offer me a million dollars to have a baby (Yes I can be stubborn) I was proud of my list and was going to follow through. So, I told my friend and family about “The List”….mistake. Soon, people were jokingly telling me that they would help fund my European excursion and my get me a puppy. I was SO FRUSTRATED! I felt like I was for ONCE in my life, I was listening to people around me and taking their advice….just to be asked a few months later “So when you popping one out?” With all of these comments….I became baby crazy. I looked up baby pictures, strolled through the baby clothes at target, stalked the nursery at church… was (mildly still is) a bad case of Baby Fever. I felt like every where I looked there were babies and I was the only one without a baby.

After a few weeks of this, I decided to look online “when is the best time to have a baby”. Google did it’s job well in giving me quizzes, forums, blogs….it gave me EVERYTHING. I read, read, and read. I read that after two years of being married was the perfect time, I read that conceiving on the wedding night was the best thing that could happen to a couple, one year after being married, a year an a half….so many opinions. Then there were the “is your body in the right condition to have a baby” forums and all the precautions you need to take and all the vitamins….blah, blah, BLAH! All of the information hurt my head.

What I decided from all this craziness is that (and this is my personal opinion) no one is ever ready to have a baby. Having a baby is like getting a tattoo on your forehead (people who get it usually aren’t cognitively aware that it happened……until the next morning) it is PERMANENT. At the end of the day though, they become life’s greatest gift.

So what does this mean for me? Am I going to have a baby anytime soon? No, probably not. I know that I would love to spend as much time with Josh and travel. Traveling to Europe may have to wait until later though……you never know what a bottle of wine can do on any given night 😉

Cheers to our future babies,

G&S Recipes: Cinnamon Donuts

Ok I have a confession to make….

In the car last night, on my way to the store, a catchy song began to play on the radio. Being that I love a good song, I turned it up and started rocking out……..I NEEDED to know who the song was by. So looking at my radio screen I read in horror: “Story of My Life, One Direction”………ONE DIRECTION……what is wrong with me?? Have I already crossed the bridges of “single and fabulous” to “married and blissful” to  “married and crushing on boy bands”? Will my friends accept me if they knew? Will I still have friends? Will my husband accept me? Is this what a midlife crisis feels like? Am I going through a mid life crisis at 21?? Who am I? What am I doing with my life???

From the 15 seconds that my mind raced through all of these thoughts to the other 30 seconds it took me to realize that IT IS ONLY A SONG, I realized that I let my mind wander too much……and yes I can be a bit of a drama queen at times (only in my head though….although I am sure my husband would probably say otherwise 😉 ) Lesson learned: It is OKAY to like a One Direction song…I think?

So..DONUTS. I LOVE DONUTS. Do I eat donuts? That would be rarely and never…maybe at church sometimes! I have a hard time resisting free donuts, with pink icing and sprinkles (how can anyone resist pink and sprinkles?) The only real problem I have with donuts is the guilt and shame that follows, after devouring it. The whole saying “moment on your lips, lifetime on your hips” haunts me. So after many years of denying my burning passion for donuts, I decided to attempt a “healthier” donut. Yes I use parentheses because how healthy can a donut get? I mean, unless you used like spinach and cauliflower and bananas……maybe I will attempt it one day, BUT REALLY it doesn’t sound good……..does it?

Anyhow, I was inspired once again by Joy the Baker with this recipe! See her recipe here: In reality these aren’t your regular fried donuts (making the guilt factor lower) and are really a cinnamon bread mixture, with a vanilla glaze and cinnamon topping.

Cinnamon Topping:

  • 1/3 cup of brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Cinnamon Dough:

  • 2/3 cup of can sugar
  • 1/2 cup of coconut oil (the recipe calls for butter but I love me my coconut oil!!)
  • 2 eggs (I like to use brown eggs)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla paste (you can also use vanilla extract)
  • 1 1/2 cups of wheat flour
  • 1 3/4 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 1/2 cup of coconut milk (or what ever type of milk you like)
  • The recipe also calls for 1 apple, peeled and chopped but I decided to skip on this. Let me know how it goes if you do end up using it though 🙂
  • A sprinkle of cinnamon

Vanilla Glaze:

  • 2 cups of powdered sugar
  • 2/4 tsp. of vanilla paste
  • 10 tsp. of coconut milk

Before we get into the nitty gritty here’s a slideshow of cinnamon donut porn:

Preheat oven to 350˚ and grease a donut pan (I bought mine form target for 13 bucks)

Mix the brown sugar and cinnamon topping together in a bowl and set aside.

Mix together the sugar and coconut oil until smooth. Add in each egg one at a time and beat until completely combined. Scrape the sides of the bowl to get any extra sugar and add the vanilla. Mix for a minute or two.

In a separate bowl (yes you will use a lot of bowls) whisk together the flour and baking powder; slowly mix into the batter. Add milk and beat for two minutes or until everything is completely blended! (Here is where you would also add the apples)

Scoop the batter into the donut pan by two tbsp fulls. Place in the oven to bake for about 8-10 minutes depending on your oven.

While your donuts are baking, get a cooling rack out and place foil underneath it. You will be using this to cool and glaze your donuts right when they come out of the oven.

With your time left, mix the powdered sugar and vanilla together. Add the coconut milk and whisk together. Set aside next to the oven with your cinnamon and sugar mixture close by.

Once the timer is up, remove the donut pan out of the oven and let it sit for a minute or two to cool off. After, take the pan and flip the donuts over onto the cooling rack that you have prepared. Let the donuts sit for another two minutes. While your donuts are cooling off, you can put another batch into the oven.

Take each cooled donut, one at a time, and dip the top half (do this with your hand) into the glaze and then into the cinnamon mixture. Place onto the cooling rack and wait for the glaze to harden. Repeat this process with each donut and donuts baking in the oven.

After allowing these beauties to harden for about five minutes or so, take one and bite into it slowly allowing your taste buds to really experience the flavor. Then quickly devour the entire batch before having to share with anyone else ;)…I wonder if One Direction likes donuts….
